Pastured Broilers
"Never underestimate the power of poultry" - Richard Perkins
Health at every level - For the soil, the animals and humans
Our fundamental philosophy regarding broiler management is based on the idea that the birds, as warm-blooded, monogastric omnivores, have some similar physiological needs to humans. What we feed them also affects us. For example, if we include PUFA (polyunsaturated fatty acids) in their feed, those fatty acids will be transferred to the meat we consume and have the same effect on us as on the broiler. This means we carefully select their feed and allow the birds to live in a way that results in a product where the well-being of the animals, the soil, and humans are at the center.
Small-scale broilers - A proven concept
We acquire the broilers as day-old chicks. They live indoors for about three weeks until they are developed enough to manage outside. Their feed is rationed and they have constant access to clean water. The chicks are encouraged to move around to find warmth under the heat lamps, food, and water. The space also has a large window that provides natural light to the broiler chicks even before they move outdoors. Out on pasture, the broilers live in so-called Salatin pens, named after the pioneer Joel Salatin, which are moved daily to fresh grass. This pen system protects the birds from weather, wind, and predators, while also allowing us to manage their contribution to the land, known as "animal impact," and prevent them from walking over the same ground repeatedly. This is good pasture management and a hygiene measure that reduces the risk of, among other things, parasitic diseases and E. coli by minimizing the time the broilers are exposed to their own droppings.
Every broiler counts - Responsible artisanal food
The broilers' feed is primarily grain-based, a mix of organic wheat and oats, with corn gluten added to increase the protein content. We've chosen corn gluten due to the lack of suitable animal-based protein sources and because it has a good amino acid profile. By special request, the feed has been made very low in fat with the smallest possible amount of PUFA, and it is completely soy-free. The broilers are slaughtered on the farm by us and sold directly to customers. Each slaughter is primarily done by order, but any surplus broilers are frozen and can be sold later in the year. The handling is gentle, and the stress on the birds is minimal, which makes the transport chain simple and efficient. Since we retain the full sales value ourselves, it means that each individual broiler matters significantly more.

Our pastured broilers are only available in limited amounts. We raise our broilers in small batches during the summer season and they usually sell out quickly.
